BOILING SPRINGS – Beau Hilton hurled 6.1 shutout innings and Gardner-Webb used a three-run third inning to power a 4-1 win over USC Upstate Wednesday afternoon at John Henry Moss Stadium / Bill Masters Field.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs (8-3-1) loaded the bases with one out in the third and went on top when Ryan Hodge coaxed a walk for a 1-0 lead. Brad Collins then stepped up with two outs and rapped a two-run single to right field for a 3-0 advantage.

USC Upstate (8-3) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but Mitch Warner came out of the bullpen to strand the bags full with a pair of ground balls. The Spartans pieced together some offense in the eighth, converting a pair of singles into a run on an RBI groundout to trim the lead to 3-1.

Gardner-Webb took advantage of an error to add an insurance run in the eighth. Scott Coleman reached on an error to lead off, moved to second on a wild pitch and stood at third with one out after a sacrifice bunt. Henry Rundio made the score 4-1 with an RBI single and Jeff Howell picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Hilton (2-0) allowed just four hits, all singles, and fanned four for the mound win. JJ Nazzaro continued his hot streak at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run and raising his batting average to .367 for the season. Collins went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Rundio (1-for-4, RBI) and Sam Fulginiti (1-for-3) also had hits.

Brandon Patterson (2-for-4) and Tyler Miller (2-for-4) each had a pair of the Spartans’ six hits. Chris Cox (1-1) took the loss, allowing three unearned runs in 3.0 innings of work (four hits allowed, one walk).

Gardner-Webb will host Air Force on Friday at 4:00 pm in John Henry Moss Stadium / Bill Masters Field.
