BOILING SPRINGS – Erik Heiligenstadt hurled a complete-game, four-hit shutout and Benji Jackson drove in two runs to spark Gardner-Webb's 4-0 win over Campbell Saturday afternoon.

The win marked No. 300 for head coach Rusty Stroupe with the Runnin' Bulldogs (12-6-1, 1-1 Big South). Stroupe, a native of nearby Cherryville, N.C., is in his 11th season as head coach at Gardner-Webb. He has gone 300-284-2 during his time in Boiling Springs – twice leading GWU to league tournament finals appearances (2008, 2011).

Heiligenstadt (3-0) hurled the fourth shutout of the season for Gardner-Webb, and the third complete game shutout for the GWU pitching staff. He scattered four singles and posted two of his four strikeouts in the ninth inning. He needed only 112 pitches to complete the game.

Gardner-Webb scored a pair of runs in the third to take the lead for good. JJ Nazzaro led off with a walk, moved to third on a single by Scott Coleman and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. Coleman moved up to third on a wild pitch, then scored easily on an RBI single from Brad Collins for a 2-0 lead.

The Runnin' Bulldogs struck for two more runs in the fifth, getting a single from Henry Rundio and a double from Coleman to chase Campbell starter Matt Marksberry from the game. Reliever Hector Cedeno came on and struck out the first batter he faced, but Benji Jackson ripped a two-run single into right for a 4-0 Gardner-Webb lead.

Heiligenstadt stranded a pair of Campbell runners in the sixth, then sat the Camels down in order in the seventh. He pitched around an infield single in the eighth and sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a ground ball to third to end the game.

Gardner-Webb managed seven hits Saturday afternoon, with Scott Johnson (2-for-2, 2B) and Scott Coleman (2-for-4, 2B, 2 runs) leading the way. Rundio (1-for-4), Collins (1-for-4, RBI) and Jackson (1-for-3, 2 RBI) had the other hits for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Campbell (15-3, 1-1 Big South) got a pair of hits from Clayton Brown (2-for-3) and singles from Michael Felton (1-for-4), Elijah Trail (1-for-4).

Marksberry (3-1) took his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks in 4.0 innings of work. Cedano worked 4.0 scoreless innings and allowed just two hits out of the pen, striking out five and walking two.

Gardner-Webb and Campbell will play the series' rubber match on Sunday at 2:00 pm. The game will air live on the Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com).
