The lead grew to 3-0 in the sixth, when Henry Rundio led off with a single and moved to third after a pair of ground outs. Dusty Quattlebaum was intentionally walked and stole second to put a pair in scoring position - and John Harris delivered a clutch, two-run single to right center to put the 'Dogs up by three runs.
A two-run single by Quattlebaum in the seventh put Gardner-Webb on top 5-0, driving home Rundio and Johnson.
UAB struck for its lone run in the eighth, getting a one-out single from Ivan De Jesus and an RBI triple from John Frost to cut the lead to 5-1. Howell closed out the eighth without any further damage, and Izokovic pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
Gardner-Webb collected eight hits in the game, getting two each from Brad Collins (2-for-4) and Rundio (2-for-4). Quattlebaum and Harris each drove in a pair of runs for the 'Dogs.
Frost went 2-for-4 to pace UAB's six-hit offensive effort. Dylan Munger was tagged with the loss for the Blazers, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out eight.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return home for a four-game homestand, opening by hosting North Carolina A&T at 3:00 pm on Wednesday.
