BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb bolted to a 6-0 lead after four at bats, and had eight of its 16 hits go for extra bases to power a 16-5 win over North Carolina A&T.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-1-1) got a 3-run homer from Sam Fulginiti in the top of the second and a 2-run shot from John Harris in the third to go up 5-0. Scott Johnson added a sacrifice fly to plate Fulginiti in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage.

The Aggies got a solo home run from Kelvin Freeman to lead off the bottom of the fourth for its first run of the game, and added two more runs on an RBI double from Bo McMillan to trim the lead to 6-3.

The Runnin' Bulldogs got a double from Scott Coleman and an RBI single from Brad Collins to go up 7-3 in the seventh, but North Carolina A&T rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom half. Ryan Hodge's two-run double in the eighth gave GWU a 9-5 lead – and the Runnin' Bulldogs exploded for seven runs in the top of the ninth for the final margin.

Gardner-Webb collected five hits in its final at bat, with RBI singles from Henry Rundio and Fulginiti, an RBI walk by Alex Newman and a two-run single from Tyler Best. Brantley Smith closed out the scoring with a two-run double, driving home Best and Newman.

J.J. Nazzaro (3-for-4), Fulginiti (3-for-5, HR, 4 RBI), Benji Jackson (2-for-4, 2 runs) and Collins (2-for-5, 2 runs, RBI) paced Gardner-Webb's offensive effort.

Beau Hilton (1-0) picked up the win, scattering eight hits and three runs in 5.0 innings on the mound. Mitch Warner, Brad Haymes and Justin Gullickson closed out the game with scoreless appearances out of the pen.

Kirby Whicker (0-1) was tagged with the loss for A&T, allowing five earned runs on four hits in 3.0 innings. The Aggies managed 11 hits, with Freeman (3-for-4, HR, RBI) and Cameron Jergens (3-for-4, RBI) accounting for more than half that total.

Gardner-Webb heads to the coast for a tough weekend tournament, battling No. 18 San Diego on Friday at noon in Wilmington, N.C. GWU will take on Stony Brook at noon Saturday and will play host UNC Wilmington at 2:00 on Sunday.

All three Gardner-Webb opponents participated in the NCAA Regionals last season.
