BOILING SPRINGS – Matt Fraudin hurled 6.2 solid innings and Gardner-Webb got two RBI from Scott Johnson and Ryan Hodge to top Charleston Southern, 7-3, Friday night.

Fraudin (5-2) won his second start in a row, scattering five singles and fanning five with two runs allowed. GWU is 3-1 in Big South games that the Upper St. Clair, Pa., sophomore has started so far this season.

Gardner-Webb (16-13-1, 5-5 Big South) got a big hit from Hodge to power a rally in the second inning. The shortstop's two-run double with one out plated Johnson and Sam Fulginiti for a 3-0 lead and Hodge scored on Henry Rundio's RBI knock for a 4-0 advantage.

Charleston Southern (11-18, 3-4 Big South) got three singles in the top of the third to trim the lead to 4-2, but Gardner-Webb took advantage of an error to go up 5-2 and got a sacrifice fly from Johnson to make the score 6-2.

Reliever Brad Haymes pitched Gardner-Webb out of a jam in the seventh, after the Bucs loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of walks. Haymes came on with the tying run at the plate, and got a fly ball to end the frame with GWU still on top 6-2.

Charleston Southern struck for an unearned run in the top of the eighth, getting a two-out RBI single from Chase Shelton to trim the lead to 6-3.

Johnson returned the cushion to four runs in the bottom half of the eighth, however, ripping a two-out single to right center to drive home pinch runner Taylor Fisher from first.

Justin Gullickson came on with a 7-3 lead in the ninth and rolled a double play after plunking the leadoff batter. The redshirt junior got an infield pop up to end the game.

The Runnin' Bulldogs collected eight hits in the game, with Johnson (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and John Harris (2-for-3) leading the way.

Ryan Gunter (3-4) took the mound loss for the visitors, allowing six runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work (six strikeouts). Kyle Ward closed out the game with one run allowed in 2.0 innings out of the pen.

Charleston Southern had seven hits, all singles, in the game. Shelton (3-for-3, RBI) and Zack Hagaman (2-for-4, RBI) each had a pair of those hits.

The two teams will play the second game of the series on Saturday afternoon at 2:00. The Gardner-Webb Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is sponsoring a Wounded Warrior Day for the game, with all veterans and active military personnel getting through the gates free of charge.
