Newsome (Albany, N.Y. / Colonie HS) led Gardner-Webb in both scoring (12.3 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg) last season, and grew into a dominant player during stretches in league play. The redshirt senior made five game-winning baskets on the season, including four in Big South games.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound guard bumped his averages to 14.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game against Big South competition and poured in a career-high 33 points to go with nine rebounds at league champion UNC Asheville in late February.
A physical player who was at his best in traffic and around the rim, Newsome got to the free throw line 140 times and made a team-high 100 attempts (71.4 percent), including 80 makes in league play.
A testament to his consistency down the stretch, Newsome scored in double figures 21 times in Gardner-Webb's final 23 games. He averaged 17 points and 13 rebounds in two match ups with preseason league favorite Coastal Carolina, with two of his three double-doubles coming against the Chanticleers.
Newsome is one of the top-five returning scorers and rebounders in the conference and is one of six players who return for Gardner-Webb with starting experience.
