CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb center Mike Byron was named Big South Conference / Crons Brand Freshman of the Week Monday by the league office.
Byron (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill HS) was the most effective player on the court for Gardner-Webb Saturday at UNC Asheville, posting career-high totals in points (11) and rebounds (15) for the Runnin’ Bulldogs en route to his first double-double.
The 6-foot-10, 230-pounder pulled down eight of his rebounds on the offensive end, and had five points and eight total rebounds by halftime. Byron also blocked a shot and dished off an assist in 24 minutes of action.
Byron’s honor marks the third time this season that a Gardner-Webb player has been named Big South Conference Freshman of the Week.
So far in 2010-2011, Byron is averaging 4.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and a team-high 0.7 blocks per game in 13 starts (19 games played). He is shooting a solid 56.1 percent from the floor and 69.2 percent from the free throw line.
Gardner-Webb (6-13, 1-6 Big South) gets back to action on Thursday, January 20 at 7 pm against Charleston Southern at home. The first 50 students through the doors will receive a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich coupon.
A halftime contest will also be held, as Hardee’s of Boiling Springs will sponsor a ThickBurger eating competition, with $50 to go to the winner. Interested participants can sign up for the contest between 6:30 and 7:00 in Paul Porter Arena.
