CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb point
guard Luke Davis was named Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the
Week for the second time this season on Monday by the league office.
Davis (Raleigh, N.C. / Ravenscroft
School) led Gardner-Webb to a 2-1 record at the 2010 Legends Classic
Williamsburg sub-regional over the weekend, averaging 10.3 points, 5.3 assists
and 1.7 steals per game.
Against William & Mary in the
opener, Davis knocked in 4-of-7 three-point shots to finish with a career-high
15 points in a heartbreaking, 56-55, loss to the Tribe. He followed with a solid
game distributing the basketball in a win over Western Carolina, scoring seven
points and dishing off a career-high seven assists.
In the finale vs. Mercer, Davis
helped Gardner-Webb surge to a 17-point lead three times in the second half and
finished with nine points, two rebounds, six assists and three steals. He made
7-of-10 shots from the charity stripe and came up with assists on several key
possessions in the final stanza.
Davis has been a constant at the lead guard spot for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (5-3)
so far in 2010-2011, ranking second in the Big South with 4.9 assists per game
and ranking second on the team with 8.9 points per game. The 6-0, 175-pounder
is shooting an efficient 50.0 percent from the floor (21-of-42) and the
three-point arc (12-of-24) through eight starts. Davis has also made 73.9
percent (17-of-23) from the free throw line.
His efforts have helped
Gardner-Webb to its best start since going 5-3 to start the 2005-2006 season.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs will have
their first Big South Conference test this Thursday, as they travel to battle
High Point at 7 pm ET on December 2. The game will air live on MASN, with Matt
Hogue and Nate Ross providing the call.
