Boiling Springs, N.C. - Senior guard Monique Hudson had 15 of her career-high 26 points in the first half, as she led a trio of Runnin' Bulldogs in double-digit scoring in a 68-60 home conference win over High Point in Paul Porter Arena on Monday night.
The Runnin' Bulldogs overcame High Point's nine three pointers by dominating down low and off the dribble, scoring 44 points in the paint compared to only 22 by the Panthers.
After High Point took a 1-0 lead on a made free throw by guard Erin Reynolds to start the contest, Gardner-Webb used a 16-6 run over the next seven minutes to take a 16-7 lead over the Panthers on a lay up down low by redshirt-senior center Sandra Vaitkute with 13:11 to go in the opening half.
High Point clawed its way back into the game by way of the three-point line, knocking down six three-pointers in the first 20 minutes of play, en route to taking a 33-31 lead with 1:41 before the half on back-to-back free throws from forward Shamia Brown.
However, GWU finished the first half out with a 4-0 run capped off by a Brianna Dillard fast break lay up to take a 35-33 halftime lead.
In the second half, GWU refused to relinquish the lead, as the Runnin' Bulldogs ran out to a five point lead at 43-38 with 17:06 to go in the game.
Yet the Panthers refused to go away, tying the score up three times in the second half, including at 53-53 with 9:21 on the clock.
The Runnin' Bulldogs then ran off nine points, all in the paint or at the free throw line, over the next four minutes to pull out to a seven point lead at 62-55 with 5:15 to go in regulation.
Down the stretch the GWU defense clamped down, holding High Point to only three points in the final five minutes of the game, while the seniors of Dominique Hudson, Monique Hudson and LaTroya Pope scored the final six points of the game for the Runnin' Bulldogs to help seal the 68-60 home win.
Gardner-Webb was 26-of-64 from the floor overall for the game, 40.6 percent, and were 15-of-17 from the free throw line, 88.2 percent.
While the Panthers were 9-of-23 from the three-point line, 39.1 percent, High Point was only 21-of-68 from the floor overall, 30.9 percent for the game.
GWU outrebounded High Point 54-35, as Dillard hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds, while Green added a game-high 11 boards.
Behind Monique's 26 points was Vaitkute with 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, and Dominique Hudson with 13 points, seven assists and six boards.
High Point also had three players in double-digit points, as Brown had 14, LaTeisha Dean added 13 and Jurica Hargraves recorded 11 points.
Gardner-Webb (17-9, 9-4 BSC) will step out of conference play to host the Longwood Lancers on Wednesday night, February 23rd, at 7 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
High Point (12-13, 6-6 BSC) will return to action on Saturday, February 26th, as the Panthers will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to face off with the Lady Eagles of Winthrop at 4:30 p.m.
