Radford, Va. - On
a cold and breezy Saturday night, the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team battled
the Radford Highlanders to a double-overtime scoreless draw at Cupp Stadium in
Radford, Va.
The tie pushes GWU to 8-6-3 overall and 5-2-1 in conference
play, while Radford moves to 8-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the Big South.
Both teams' looked for their offense early, as the two
teams' traded shots back-and-forth to no avail in the first 12 minutes of play.
In the 13th minute, Radford's Chel Ho Kim Park put the first
shot of the match on target only to have GWU goalkeeper Scott Krotee make the
stop to keep the match scoreless.
GWU's Krotee made another save in the 16th minute, while a
Runnin' Bulldog defender blocked another Highlanders' shot only minutes later
to keep the home team off the scoreboard with a little over 25 minutes to play
in the first half.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' Ernesto Gaita put a shot on frame in
the 36th minute, only to have Radford goalkeeper Ryan Taylor make the stop to
again keep the scoreless tie with nine minutes to go in the opening half.
After Radford's Kim Park saw a shot sail high in the 38th
minute, Gardner-Webb junior midfielder John Sargent had back-to-back shot
attempts blocked just before the half, as the score remained 0-0 at the
halftime break.
The second half started with a Radford shot attempt, which
sailed wide of the goal, and then back-to-back shots once more by GWU's
Sargent, which were again both blocked, as neither team could find the first
goal of the match.
The two goalkeepers each made saves over the next 15 minutes
of play, first GWU's Krotee on a Carter Mills shot attempt in the 60th minute
and then Taylor of Radford on back-to-back GWU shots in the 61st minute.
Over the final 30 minutes of the second half, each team had
chances to score, yet neither could find the back of the net, as the match
would remain scoreless at the end of regulation to force overtime.
Like the first 90 minutes of play, the overtime period was
rather even, as each team recorded one shot over the 10 minutes of play, Davis
for GWU in the 96th minute and Luis Grande for Radford in the 100th minute,
only to have both shots blocked by defenders to force the 0-0 match into a
second overtime period.
In the second overtime period, the Runnin' Bulldogs held off
a Radford offensive attack that outshot Gardner-Webb 6-1 over the final 10
minutes of play, as the both teams failed to score the golden goal in the
scoreless double-overtime draw.
Radford outshot Gardner-Webb 18-13 for the match, while both
teams' put only three shots on goal over 110 minutes of play.
GWU held the advantage in fouls (15-11) and in corner kicks (8-6)
in the draw.
Both goalkeepers, GWU's Krotee and Radford's Taylor, made
three saves apiece in the match.
Sargent led GWU's offense with six shot attempts, while
Davis followed with four shots of his own in the draw. Gaita, Jonas Nader and Chijioke
Akujuobi each posted one shot apiece in the match, with all three going on frame.
For Radford, Grande and Brian Gwanzura each posted four
shots to lead the Highlanders, while Kim Park totaled three shots of his own.
