Boiling Springs, N.C. - For the
fourth consecutive year, the Gardner-Webb volleyball team will take on the
Liberty Lady Flames in the first round of the 2011 Big South Conference
Volleyball Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting, with the postseason
match set for Thursday, November 17th, at 12 p.m. (noon) at the CSU Buccaneer
Fieldhouse in Charleston, S.C.
Gardner-Webb, who finished tied with Coastal
Carolina at 5-9 overall in conference play, drew the No. 8 seed and No. 1 Liberty. In GWU's three previous years in the
Big South Tournament, the Runnin' Bulldogs have faced off with the Lady Flames
all three times, twice in an #1 vs. #8 seed like this year, and once in a #2
vs. #7.
The Runnin' Bulldogs, who defeated Liberty
for the first-time in the program's 12-year Division I history on November
11th, will look to down the Lady Flames for a second-time on Thursday
afternoon.
Each team won on their respective home floor
this season in the 1-1 regular season split, however, the overall series favors
Liberty, as GWU is only 1-11 all-time versus the Lady Flames, including 0-3 in
Big South Championship play.
In fact GWU will be looking for another first
in 2011, as the Runnin' Bulldogs have never won a conference championship
tournament match since moving to NCAA Division I in 2000-01. The Runnin' Bulldogs, who did not make the postseason tournament in the
Atlantic Sun until 2006, lost in the first round to Jacksonville in both 2006
and 2007. After joining the Big
South in 2008, the Runnin' Bulldogs have fallen in the first round of the
championship tournament to Liberty in each of the last three years.
Liberty, who finished the conference regular
season at 12-2, will look to avenge the late season lost to the Runnin'
Bulldogs, which spoiled Liberty's out right chance at the 2011 Big South
Regular Season Championship and placed the Lady Flames in a tie for first-place
overall with the Lady Eagles of Winthrop.
The match is slated for a 12 p.m. start time
and is scheduled to be video streamed over the Big South Network, presented by
