Gaffney, S.C. - GWU's men's swim team is off to a fast start
to 2012, downing the Limestone College Saints by a score of 171-91 to gain its
second consecutive win following the Christmas break.
Gardner-Webb moves to 3-2 in dual meets this season.
GWU, which won 10 of 14 events, got things rolling early
with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay. Jordan Denmark, Drew Ellwanger, Cole Hickey, and Samuel Woods teamed up to take first place with a time of 1:38.99 for
the Runnin' Bulldogs, followed closely by the second place relay squad of Colin James, Collin Burchins, DJ Hughes, and Mitchell Turner (1:39.89).
In the 1000 free, senior Derek Gore held off Limestone's
Michael Sanders to ensure the win, clocking in at a season best 10:09.74.
Fellow senior Christopher Musco grabbed fourth with a time of 10:35.84.
Sophomore Sam Wilson led GWU in the 200 free with a second
place finish, timing in at 1:47.98. Sophomore Phil Leonard followed with a
third place finish (1:52.49) for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb got another 1-2 finish when Denmark and Taft Kallam outpaced the field in the 100 back, finishing in 53.32 and 56.48
respectively. Drew Ellwanger added another win in the 100 breast, touching the
wall at 58.22. Turner and Brandon Searle finished the event with times of
1:04.34 and 1:04.73, good enough for third and fourth respectively.
Junior DJ Hughes nabbed a second place showing in the 200
fly with a season best time of 2:00.07. Fellow junior Tyler Nuss followed with
a third place finish at 2:02.30.
Two senior Runnin' Bulldogs earned the top spots in the 50
free, as Woods and Burchins pulled away to finish at 22.57 and 22.77
respectively. In the 100 free, Hughes finished second with a time of 49.48,
followed closely by Turner and James, who recorded times of 50.44 and 50.49.
In the 200 back, Woods got his second individual win of the
night, as the senior finished with a time of 2:00.05. Wilson was right behind
him, recording a time of 2:00.26 to finish second. Gore was fourth in the
event, touching in at 2:05.81. Denmark grabbed another individual win in the
200 breast in a season best time of 2:13.16. Cody Meyers and Tyler Nuss were
third (2:21.06) and fourth (2:26.79) respectively.
In the 500 free, Kallam got the first individual win of his
collegiate career, holding off Limestone's Sanders to finish with a time of
4:54.41. Leonard was third in 5:08.02, and Will Payne finished in fourth place
with a time of 5:08.27. Ellwanger and Burchins secured the second and third
positions in the 100 fly, timing in at 54.43 and 54.56 respectively.
Searle led from start to finish to claim the win in the 200
IM, finishing with a time of 2;01.84. Meyers grabbed second in the event at
2:03.58, and Leonard was fourth at 2:04.74.
Gardner-Webb closed out the night with a come-from-behind
win in the 400 free relay, as the quartet of Woods, Gore, Wilson, and Hickey
finished with a time of 3:19.51.
GWU turns around to swim at CCSA rival Davidson on Saturday
in a key conference matchup. The meet in Davidson, N.C. is slated to start at 1
pm.
