Davidson, N.C. - Gardner-Webb men's swimming took to the
road Saturday afternoon to take on Davidson, ultimately falling to their CCSA
counterparts 195.5-88.5.
GWU moves to 3-3 in dual meets this season.
In the 200 medley relay, GWU put up a strong effort in the
meet's first event, claiming second place with a time of 1:34.55. Colin James,
Drew Ellwanger, DJ Hughes, and Cole Hickey combined for GWU's top time in the
event.
Gardner-Webb took second and third place in the 1000 free.
Sophomore Sam Wilson (New Bern, N.C.) finished in 9:55.80 for GWU, followed by
junior Tyler Nuss (Cincinnati, Oh.) 9:58.33. The times were season bests for
both distance specialists.
Senior Samuel Woods (Clemson, S.C.) led GWU in the 200 free,
finishing third in 1:50.22. Sophomore Taft Kallam (Randleman, N.C.) was fourth
in the event with a time of 1:50.28.
Sophomore Jordan Denmark (Raleigh, N.C.) was second in the
100 back, touching the wall at 51.85 for Gardner-Webb. James (Greensboro, N.C.)
took fourth with a time of 54.55.
Gardner-Webb took first in the 100 breast, as Ellwanger
(Newborn, Ga.) touched first with a time of 57.59. The junior currently holds
the CCSA's season top time in the event (56.40).
Hughes (Snellville, Ga.) took second in the 200 fly,
achieving a season best time of 1:57.48. Sophomore Cody Meyers (Mobile, Ala.)
was fourth for GWU with a time of 1:59.06.
Hickey (Charlotte, N.C.) paced GWU in the 50 free with a
third place effort, finishing with a time of 22.12. In the 100 free, Hughes
(48.86) and Woods (49.39) took third and fourth respectively.
Denmark raced to a second place effort in the 200 back,
finishing with a time of 1:51.52. Kallam rallied to finish third in the event
at 1:57.78. In the 200 breast, Ellwanger was second at 2:09.63. Senior Collin Burchins (Lilburn, Ga.) was fourth in the event with a time of 2:14.05.
Wilson and Nuss went 2-3 again for Gardner-Webb in the 500
free, racing to times of 4:51.48 and 4:53.29 in order. In the 100 fly, Hughes
took second with a time of 53.25, and Brandon Searle (Melbourne, Fla.) was
fourth at 54.49.
The 400 IM saw Denmark grab his third second place finish of
the day, as the sophomore finished in 4:11.24. Nuss was fourth for Gardner-Webb
with a time of 4:20.17.
GWU finished the day with second and third place efforts in
the 200 free relay. Ellwanger, Hickey, Woods, and Denmark swam to a second
place finish in a time of 1:28.82, and James, Phil Leonard, Searle, and
Mitchell Turner finished in third place with a time of 1:29.66.
Gardner-Webb will return to action for its Senior Day home
meet vs. CCSA rival College of Charleston on Saturday, Jan. 28. The meet is
scheduled for 12 pm.
