CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern outscored Gardner-Webb 28-11 in
the final 13 minutes Tuesday night to take a 73-58 win in Big South
Conference action.
Gardner-Webb (11-17, 6-10 Big South) took a 47-45 lead on Tashan
Newsome's 3-pointer with 13:32 left, but the Buccaneers (16-10, 10-6 Big
South) jumped back out front on the ensuing possession and did not
trail again.
Stefon Johnson got the 'Dogs within three points, 54-51, on a layup with
8:05 to play, but Charleston Southern answered with a steady 9-0 run to
take a 63-51 lead with 4:46 left. David Brown came off the bench to
score six unanswered points for Gardner-Webb from long distance to
quickly trim the margin back to six points - but the Buccaneers ended
the game on a 10-1 spurt.
Mathiang Muo led CSU with 21 points, Kelvin Martin added 15 and Paul
Gombwer scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Jeremy Sexton came
off the bench to contribute 10 points - which helped soften a solid
Gardner-Webb defensive effort on the standout freshman backcourt of
Arlon Harper and Saah Nimley, who combined to shoot just 3-of-11 for
seven points and seven turnovers. That duo came into Tuesday's game
averaging nearly 28 points combined per contest.
Gardner-Webb did not have a player reach double figures scoring, with
Newsome and Laron Buggs each netting nine, Mike Byron scoring eight and
both Johnson and Donta Harper scoring seven. The 'Dogs started the game
hot from the floor, shooting above 50 percent for the first 30 minutes
of the game - but missed 15 of their last 21 shots to finish at 37.0
percent for the second half and 42.9 percen for the game (21-of-49).
The turnover battle was nearly even (GWU 17, CSU 16), but the Buccaneers
converted Gardner-Webb's miscues into a 28-13 edge in points off of
turnovers. Charleston Southern shot a sizzling 60.0 percent in the
second half (15-of-25) and shot 53.8 percent for the game.
Charleston Southern led 34-31 at halftime after a tight first 20 minutes.
Both teams will step out of conference this Saturday for the annual
Sears BracketBusters event. Gardner-Webb hosts Delaware State at 7:30 pm
in Paul Porter Arena in its matchup. Charleston Southern hosts Wofford.
