Athens, Ga. - Gardner-Webb collected 23 finals swims and saw over
a dozen personal best times dropped, remaining in 3rd place after day two of
the 2012 CCSA Championships.
GWU has tallied 481.5 points to stay in contention in 3rd
place. College of Charleston held onto 1st while Davidson remains in 2nd.
Gardner-Webb got 23 total finals swims and 11 in the Top 8
thanks to a great morning prelims session.
In Friday night's first event, Gardner-Webb's A 200 medley
relay team took 2nd place, racing to a season best time of 1:30.20. Colin James, Drew Ellwanger, DJ Hughes, and Cole Hickey teamed up to shatter the
previous school record (1:31.53) and earn All-CCSA honors in the event with the
Top 3 finish.
In the 400 IM, GWU got a 3rd place finish from Tyler Nuss,
finishing in a season best 4:06.25 to earn All-CCSA marks. Sophomore Cody Meyers garnered a 4th place finish, achieving his highest ever CCSA finish with
a personal best time of 4:06.88.
Sophomore Will Payne finished 13th in the event for GWU in a
personal best time of 4:20.14.
In the 100 Fly, Gardner-Webb put four in the finals heats.
DJ Hughes led the charge, finishing 5th in 50.70. The junior achieved a season
best time of 50.70 in the event's prelims.
Brandon Searle gave GWU another Top 8 finish, grabbing 7th with a personal best
time of 51.43.
Hickey added a 10th place showing in the event with a time
of 52.24. The sophomore achieved a personal best time of 51.93 during prelims. Fellow
sophomore Will Payne raced to a 12th place finish in his highest ever CCSA finish,
clocking in a personal best time of 52.81.
Gardner-Webb was led in the 200 Free by sophomore Sam Wilson, who won the consolation heat to finish 9th in a personal best time of
1:42.71, the men's program's second fastest performance all-time in the event. Freshman Zack Edgar followed with an 11th place finish, achieving a personal best
time of 1:43.51.
Junior Mitchell Turner snagged 12th for GWU in the event,
finishing in 1:45.63. Turner swam to a season best 1:45.25 during morning
prelims. Senior Christopher Musco added a 13th place finish, finishing in a
season best 1:46.32 for Coach Simpson's squad.
In the 100 Breast, Gardner-Webb got two Top 3 finishes, as
Ellwanger and Collin Burchins earned All-CCSA honors for the event. Ellwanger
grabbed top honors, finishing in 55.80 to earn the win. The junior swam to a
personal best and school record time of 55.57 during prelims of the event.
The senior Burchins
finished 3rd for GWU, racing to a personal best time of 56.64 in earning All-CCSA recognition.
Sophomore Phil Leonard added a 10th place finish for
Gardner-Webb, achieving another personal best time with a time of 59.26. Turner grabbed his second individual final in
the 100 Breast, racing to a personal best 59.76 to finish 13th for
The night's final individual event saw Gardner-Webb put
three in the Top 8 in the 100 Back. Sophomore Jordan Denmark garnered All-CCSA
honors with a 3rd place finish, swimming a personal best time of 50.71 in the

In the 100 Back, three more Gardner-Webb swimmers finaled in
the consolation heat in what was a strong event for GWU. Sophomore Taft Kallam
was 10th in 52.09, Searle was 11th in 53.11, and Edgar was 13th in 53.25, all
personal best times.
Gardner-Webb closed the night with a 3rd place finish in the
800 Free relay, clocking in at a GWU season best 6:56.93 Hughes, Woods, Wilson,
and Kallam teamed up to record the 2nd fastest performance all-time for
Gardner-Webb in the event.
CCSA Championships will resume tomorrow morning, with Day 3
