Boiling Springs, N.C.
- The Gardner-Webb softball team is slated to play a total of nine games
this week, including four games at home on Tuesday and Wednesday, before
heading to Wilmington, N.C. to play in the Seahawk Classic hosted by UNC
Wilmington from February 24-26th.
Gardner-Webb (2-2) went 2-2 last week, winning both games of
a home twin bill over Morgan State on Friday afternoon and then dropping two
games against Furman on Saturday afternoon in Greenville, S.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs, who are 2-0 at home thus far this season,
went 6-7 overall at home last year and will look to add to their win total this
season.
GWU, who is looking to snap a two-game losing streak, is
looking to hand head coach Tom Cole his 300th victory as the leader of the
Runnin' Bulldog softball program. Cole
has totaled 297 wins at GWU, putting him three shy of the 300 mark.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Runnin' Bulldogs will host North
Carolina A&T in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Varsity Field.
The Lady Aggies, who will be playing their season opener on
Tuesday, were picked to finish third overall in the Southern Division of the
MEAC, coming in tied with South Carolina State in the preseason polls.
Last season N.C. A&T finished the year at 7-35 overall
and were 0-16 in true road contests.
GWU has won four straight contests over the Lady Aggies and
are 14-4 versus North Carolina A&T since moving to NCAA Division I in 2001.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Runnin' Bulldogs will turn
around and host the Spartans of USC Upstate at 1 p.m.
Upstate, who also has a game on Sunday afternoon, is 6-0
thus far this season with five of those wins being shutouts.
The Spartans are coming off a school record 42-win season in
2011 and was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference in the
preseason coaches' poll. However, the Spartans, who are 11-1 versus
Gardner-Webb since 2001, have 14 new players this season.
Over the weekend, the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the
Seahawk Classic in Wilmington, N.C.
On Friday, the Runnin' Bulldogs are slated to take on Kansas
out of the Big 12 at 12:15 p.m. and then turn around to take on the host UNC
Wilmington at 4:45 p.m.
Gardner-Webb will return to play on Saturday, as the Runnin'
Bulldogs will face off with Fairfield at 10 a.m. before competing in one of the
semi-final contests later on in the afternoon.
