Charlotte, N.C - Gardner-Webb
junior Erica White (Charleston,
W.Va.) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's
Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate Alice Hopkins (Birmingham, England) has been named The Crons Brand
Freshman of the Week for matches played Feb. 13-19, it was announced today by
the League office.
White went 2-1 last week
with two singles victories to remain undefeated in individual competition this
season. She defeated Presbyterian's Paige Oelke 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles
to help the Runnin' Bulldogs grab a road win in their Conference opener.
White then outlasted East Carolina's Yilan Zhang by a score of 6-3, 6-3 at No.
3 singles to propel GWU to its first win over the Pirates in program history.
Hopkins was a perfect 2-0 in
both singles and doubles action last week to help Gardner-Webb win matches
against Presbyterian and East Carolina. She first claimed victories at
No. 2 singles (straight-sets) and No. 2 doubles vs. the Blue Hose, and followed
with wins at the same flight against the Pirates. Against ECU, Hopkins
battled back to win a singles point, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, and teamed with fellow
freshman Yasmin Doost to clinch
the doubles point in the 4-3 team victory.
Gardner-Webb women's tennis
hosts a pair of matches this weekend. The Runnin' Bulldogs will take on Wofford
on Friday at 2:00 p.m. and will do battle with Big South foe Radford on Sunday
at 1:00 p.m.
