BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb
will close out the regular season at home Saturday afternoon, hosting
Presbyterian at 4:30 in Paul Porter Arena.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (12-18, 6-11
Big South) will honor seniors Laron Buggs and David Brown prior to tipoff,
which will air as usual on WGWG-FM (88.3 / wgwg.org) - with Fabian Fuentes
providing the call from courtside.
Gardner-Webb is locked into the
No. 9 seed in the upcoming Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Men's
Basketball Championship, which means the 'Dogs will play at the No. 8 seed
Monday night.
That opponent will not be known
until Saturday night, with four potential opponents in a logjam just above
Gardner-Webb in the standings. Winthrop, High Point, Liberty and VMI each have
eight wins heading into the final day of regular season play.
Tashan Newsome had a career-best
night at UNC Asheville, scoring 33 points to keep Gardner-Webb in contention
for an upset until the final minutes. Newsome's effort marked the most points
by a Runnin' Bulldog since joining the Big South in 2008-2009 - and the most since
Grayson Flittner poured in 34 markers in a home win vs. ETSU on February 21,
2008.
Wing Donta Harper, the reigning
Big South Conference Freshman of the Week, netted eight points Thursday night,
and is averaging 10.0 points per game over his past four outings. The 6-foot-6
standout has also emerged as one of the team's most effective defensive players
- guarding a variety of positions on the floor very well. Guard Max Landis
(10.1 ppg), who missed Thursday's game with an illness, is the squad's second-leading
scorer.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will face a
veteran Presbyterian team on Saturday afternoon, with three redshirt senior
standouts playing their final college game. Center A'Lonzo Coleman (16.5 ppg,
8.6 rpg) leads the way, and the preseason All-Big South selection was a beast
in Thursday's win at Radford - pumping in 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in
a strong win for the Blue Hose (13-15, 7-10 Big South).
Junior wing Khalid Mutakabbir is
the team's second-leading scorer at 13.9 ppg, and Coach Gregg Nibert continues
to get strong production from redshirt senior point guard Pierre Miller and
classmate Josh Johnson.
With the league's unbalanced
schedule, Saturday will mark the only meeting between Gardner-Webb and
Presbyterian on the hardwood this season. The two teams split last season's
games, with each winning on their home court. GWU has won three of the last
four games in the series overall.

afternoon's game, call Gardner-Webb athletics at (704) 406-4340.
