- The Gardner-Webb softball team will continue their current 18-game road
trip this week by taking on nationally ranked teams Georgia and Florida, as
well as Tennessee State and Eastern Michigan, in Athens, Ga. and Gainesville,
GWU will take on No. 13/13 Georgia on Wednesday night at
6:30 p.m. in Athens, Ga., before heading to the Sunshine State to compete
against No. 1/3 Florida, Tennessee State and Eastern Michigan at the 2012 UF
Lipton Invitational Tournament on Friday through Sunday in Gainesville, Fla.
Gardner-Webb, who is 6-7 overall, posted a 4-5 record last
week posting two wins over both North Carolina A&T and UNC Wilmington. GWU went 2-3 over the weekend at the
Seahawk Classic, as both wins came over host UNC Wilmington, while the losses
came to Kansas and Fairfield.
The Runnin' Bulldogs blasted five home runs over the weekend
and now have nine home runs as a team on the season.
Georgia, who will host the Runnin' Bulldogs for a single
game on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. in Athens, Ga., is ranked No. 13 overall
in both the USA Today/NFCA Poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Poll
heading into action this week.
The Bulldogs are 12-2 overall and are coming off a 3-2 win
over No. 6 Oklahoma last week.
On Friday, day one of the 2012 UF Lipton Invitational, the
Runnin' Bulldogs will take on Tennessee Temple at 1:30 p.m. and then No. 1/3
Florida at 6:30 p.m.
GWU will then return to the diamond on Saturday to do battle
with Eastern Michigan at 9:30 a.m. and Florida once more at 12:00 p.m. high
The Runnin' Bulldogs will wrap up the tournament on Sunday
with games against Eastern Michigan at 9:00 a.m. and Tennessee State at 11:15
Florida enters play this week ranked No. 1overall in the USA
Today/NFCA Poll and No. 3 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Poll. The Gators are 13-1 overall on the year
with the lone loss coming to No. 5 Washington.
Tennessee State is 4-5 on the season, yet have dropped their
last two games. The Tigers were
picked to finish 11th overall in the Ohio Valley Conference in the coaches'
preseason poll in early February.
Eastern Michigan, who has played every game thus far this
season in Orlando, Fla., is 2-4 overall on the season heading into play this
week having dropped their last three contests. The Eagles, who will play four games this week before the
Lipton Invitational begins on Friday, March 2nd, were picked to finish fifth in
the MAC West Division this season in the conference preseason poll.
