Asheville, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to hand host UNC Asheville its first Big South loss, falling 4-0 on the road Tuesday in a match shortened due to persistent thunderstorms in the area.
Gardner-Webb (6-13, 0-5) fell behind in doubles play, dropping the matches at all three doubles positions as the host Bulldogs jumped to a 1-0 lead early on.
After the match was moved indoors due to the inclement weather, the Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to maintain any momentum against Asheville (10-7, 3-0), who was able to seal the match with singles wins at the No. 1, 2, and 3 positions.
Both Adam Knutsson-Sundblad (No. 2) and Roman Piftor (No. 3) won the first set in their matches, but were unable to hold off their opponents. Knutsson-Sundblad dropped a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision, and Piftor came out on the losing end of a tough 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 margin.
The singles matches at No.'s 4, 5, and 6 were not completed.
GWU returns to action Saturday, April 7, staying in conference for a road tilt with Campbell. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
