BOILING SPRINGS - Coastal Carolina scored single runs in five different innings Friday night and held on for a 5-2 win over Gardner-Webb in the opener of a three-game Big South Conference series.
The Chanticleers (19-9, 3-1 Big South) went up 1-0 in the top of the second, but saw Gardner-Webb (16-15, 2-5 Big South) rally to tie the score on an RBI single from Brad Collins in the bottom of that same inning.
The Chants got an RBI single from Chris Susek in the top of the third for a 2-1 lead and a solo home run to right field from Alex Buccilli in the top of the fifth to build its lead to 3-1.
Zeke Blanton legged out a bunt single in the bottom of the fifth, and scored after swiping third when the throw down was misplayed and scooted into left - cutting the deficit to 3-2. GWU got a two-out single from Ryan Hodge after Blanton scored, but stranded him on first base.
A two-out, RBI triple by All-Big South outfielder Daniel Bowman in the seventh pushed Coastal Carolina's lead to 4-2 - but Gardner-Webb attempted to rally in the bottom half. The Runnin' Bulldogs got the tying run on board with one out, and loaded the bases with two away, but could not get anything on the board.
The Chants tacked on an insurance run in the eighth for the final margin.
Coastal Carolina collected nine hits in the game, with eight different players getting at least one of those. Brian Pruett (2-for-4, run, RBI) had a pair of safeties for the Chants.
Starter Tyler Herb (5-2) picked up the win, scattering five hits and allowing just two runs over 5.0 innings of work. Herb fanned seven and walked just one. Aaron Burke hurled 2.0 scoreless innings for the save, allowing just one hit.
Gardner-Webb starter Matt Fraudin (1-3) lasted a career-high 7.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Brock Wilson closed out the game for GWU, working 2.0 innings and allowing one run on one hit.
GWU had seven hits in the game, with Blanton (2-for-3, run) and Dusty Quattlebaum (2-for-4, 2B) pacing that effort.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday, with a doubleheader set to begin at 1:00 pm.
