- The Gardner-Webb softball team will wrap up a five-game home stand on
Wednesday afternoon, April 11th, against the 49ers of Charlotte before hitting
the road to return to Big South Conference play over the weekend at Winthrop
University in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will host Charlotte on Wednesday
afternoon at 2 p.m. in a non-conference twin tilt.
GWU's three-game conference series at Winthrop will take
place on Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15th, with a doubleheader scheduled for
1 p.m. on April 14th and a single game set for 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon,
April 15th.
Gardner-Webb is 17-21 overall and 4-6 in conference play
this season.
The Runnin' Bulldogs, who have gone 4-3 over their last
seven games, are 7-7 at home thus far this season and 6-7 on the road.
Last week, the Runnin' Bulldogs, who went 2-1 in a
three-game series with Campbell, had six players hit over .300 for the
series. Savannah Burns hit .625
with a team-high five hits, five RBI and eight total bases over the three-game
span, while McKenzie Morenus hit .500 with three hits and an RBI. Sophomore Elizabeth Williams went 3-5
with a walk and three total bases over two-games last weekend.
The Charlotte 49ers have won each of their last five games
and sit at 19-18 overall on the season. The 49ers are 8-3 in true road contests
this season with wins at George Washington, Elon and Furman.
Briana Gwaltney, Alex Rodgers and Jackie Kleinsmith, who are
all hitting over .300 on the season, lead Charlotte. Gwaltney leads the team with a .355 average, 13 home runs,
35 RBI, 86 total bases and 39 total hits.
In the circle, Lexi Betancourt leads Charlotte with 12 wins
and a 3.20 ERA on the year. She
also is tied with Katie Watkins for the team lead in strikeouts with 85 on the
season.
The Lady Eagles of Winthrop enter play this week at 13-27
overall and 2-10 in Big South Conference play.
Winthrop, who will host Western Carolina in a non-conference
doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, have lost six straight games, all of which
have come in Big South play.
Chelsey Schoenfeldt and Megan Chapman lead the Lady Eagles
offensively, as Schoenfeldt is hitting a team-high .372 with five home runs,
seven doubles and 25 RBI, while Chapman is hitting .321 with 35 hits and 14 walks.
