Rock Hill, S.C. - Gardner-Webb
freshman catcher Amanda Gomes' three-run double in the sixth proved to be the
difference maker, as the Runnin' Bulldogs defeated the Winthrop Lady Eagles in
a 3-2 come from behind win on Sunday afternoon at Terry Field in Rock Hill,
S.C.
The win was the Runnin' Bulldogs second straight come from
behind win over the Winthrop Lady Eagles and gave Gardner-Webb the 2-1 series
win.
With the win GWU improves to 20-23 overall and 6-7 in
conference play, while Winthrop falls to 15-30 overall and 3-12 in conference
action on the year.
Over the first three innings of play, the Runnin' Bulldog
offense had one hit, a two-out single off the bat of designated player
Elizabeth Williams in the top of the second, yet stayed in the game by way of
the right arm of sophomore pitcher Jessica Childers and the GWU defense.
Despite two Winthrop singles and a wild pitch over the first
three innings of play, four strikeouts by Childers and three putouts by the
Gardner-Webb infield kept the score at 0-0 over the first three innings.
After failing to score again in the top of the fourth,
despite a two-out single by senior McKenzie Morenus, Winthrop recorded three
hits in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by an RBI double by Chelsey
Schoenfeldt and an RBI single by Alex White, to jump out to a 2-0 lead on the
Runnin' Bulldogs with three innings remaining in the contest.
Gardner-Webb got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth,
as lead-off hitter Samantha Meenaghan singled to right field with one out.
After a GWU strikeout, freshman Savannah Burns and Morneus drew back-to-back
walks to load the bases with two outs. Gomes
would come through with a clutch hit for the Runnin' Bulldogs, as she ripped a
two-out double to right center field to clear the bases and put the visitors on
top for the first time in the game at 3-2.
Redshirt-senior Cindy Boomhower, who entered the game to
pitch in the middle of the fourth, shut down the Lady Eagle offense, holding
Winthrop to just two base runners on one hit and a GWU error over the final two
innings of play, to help the Runnin' Bulldogs hold on for the 3-2 come from
behind win.
Boomhower (8-5) earned the win in relief work, her second of
the weekend, as she held Winthrop scoreless on three hits and two strikeouts
over the final 3.2 innings of play.
Childers, who started the game for GWU, allowed two runs on four hits,
while striking out four in the first 3.1 innings of the contest.
Winthrop's Schoenfeldt (5-16) suffered the loss, as the
senior gave up three runs on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts over 6.0
innings of action.
Gomes was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while Morenus
(1-for-2, walk, run), Meenaghan (1-for-3, run) and Williams (1-for-3) had the
other three GWU hits for the game.
For the Lady Eagles offensively, Schoenfeldt was 2-for-3 with
a double and an RBI, while White was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Gardner-Webb will return home for a five-game home stand,
the Runnin' Bulldogs final home games of the 2012 season. The home stand will kick-off with a Big South
Conference doubleheader versus Presbyterian College on Wednesday, April 18th,
beginning at 2 p.m. at Varsity Field.
