Boiling Springs, N.C.
- Gardner-Webb freshman catcher and designated player Amanda Gomes went
3-for-7 with four RBI for the Runnin' Bulldogs, as GWU swept the doubleheader
with Presbyterian College, 7-1 and 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon to complete the
three-game regular season series sweep of the Blue Hose.
The two wins bump GWU to 24-24 overall and 10-8 in
conference play, while the Blue Hose fall to 15-28 overall and 7-11 in Big
South action.
Game 1: GWU 7,
Presbyterian 1
GWU's Gomes provided the offense, as the freshman was
3-for-4 with four RBI and was just a triple shy of the cycle, as the Runnin'
Bulldogs easily defeated the Presbyterian College Blue Hose 7-1 in game one.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
first, as Gomes singled to right field to drive in lead-off hitter Samantha Meenaghan.
After PC went down in order in the top of the second, it
would be Gomes again who would come through with a big hit in the bottom half
of the inning, blasting a three-run home run deep over the left-center field
fence to put the home team up 4-0 after two. The home run was Gomes third of the season.
Presbyterian got a run back in the top half of the third by
way of a GWU throwing error to cut the lead to three at 4-1, however, the
Runnin' Bulldog offense did not take their foot off the gas pedal, as GWU
pushed across two more runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run
triple off the bat of redshirt-junior Melinda Dulkowski.
In the bottom of the fourth, GWU added another run, this
time on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher McKenzie Morenus to put the home team
up big at 7-1.
GWU starting pitcher Jessica Childers (7-11) would keep the
Blue Hose off the scoreboard over the final three innings of play, earning the
complete game win. The sophomore
gave up one unearned run on four hits and four walks, yet struck out six in the
game.
The loss went to PC's Kensley Loudermelk (7-9), as she
surrendered seven runs, five of which were earned, on nine hits and three
walks, while striking out five over four innings of work.
Behind Gomes' 3-for-4 and four RBI was Meenaghan, who was
2-4 with two runs, and Dulkowski, who was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and a
run scored.
For the Blue Hose, Tera Powell was 2-for-3, while Rachel
Hopper (1-for-3) and Mary Ellen Morris (1-for-2) had the other two hits for the
game.
Game 2: GWU 3,
Presbyterian 2
In game two, the Runnin' Bulldogs blew a two-run lead in the
top of the seventh inning, only to take advantage of a PC miscue and score the
game-winning run in the bottom half of the inning to escape with a 3-2 win.
GWU took an early lead, as pitch runner Mariana Gallardo scored from second on a PC error in the bottom of the second to put the home
team in front 1-0 through two full innings of play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs doubled their lead in the fifth, when Morgan Baker singled to the shortstop to drive in pitch runner Jane Savage from second
and push the home team in front at 2-0 with two innings to play.
GWU starter Alyssa Gutierrez was cruising through the first
few innings, as PC did not record a hit until the top of the fifth inning on
back-to-back singles by Leslie Hensley and Morgan Durham.
With a 2-0 lead and only three outs remaining, the Runnin'
Bulldogs let the lead slip away, as Durham lined a one-out double over the head
of the GWU left fielder to drive in two and tie the score up at 2-2 in the top
of the seventh.
Not to be deterred, the Runnin' Bulldogs refused to roll
over and play dead, but rather fought back, as Baker hit a ball off the right
center field fence for a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh.
After a fielder's choice and a strikeout put runners on
first and second with two outs, freshman outfielder Kellie Beres came to the
plate. The slap hitter hit a sharp
ground ball to the PC third-baseman who watched the ball go right through her
legs and into left field. Baker
would score all the way from second on the play to give the home team the 3-2
win.
GWU's Cindy Boomhower (10-5) recorded the win, as she gave
up two runs on four hits and three strikeouts over the final 2.2 innings of
play, while Gutierrez, who did not earn a decision, was strong in the circle
for GWU allowing no runs on only two hits and one strikeout over the first 4.1
innings of the contest.
PC's Loudermelk (7-10) was saddled with the loss, as she
gave up one unearned run on one hit in 0.2 innings of work.
Baker led GWU at the plate in game two, as she was 3-for-3
with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and a run scored, while Jordyn Arrowood was
2-for-4. Beres (1-for-4), Dulkowski (1-for-3) and Morenus (1-for-4) all had a
hit in the game as well.
PC's Durham was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI, while
Hensley was 2-for-3 with a double for the game.
Gardner-Webb will hit the road for their final regular
season contests of the season this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will take
on the Radford Highlanders on Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29th, at Radford,
Va. The two teams are slated to
play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
