CHARLOTTE – The Big South Conference announced Wednesday that Gardner-Webb University was its 2015-2016 Institutional Sportsmanship Award winner.
It marks the first time GWU has won the award since joining the league as a full-time member for the 2008-2009 athletic season.
The overall winner is determined on a system that recognizes the highest percentage of the maximum points an institution is capable of receiving for each team award. The team awards were voted on by Big South student-athletes following each conference championship, and are listed below.
In addition to the institutional award, Gardner-Webb had six different teams win individual sports awards – men's golf, men's and women's indoor track & field, men's soccer, softball and volleyball.
"Sportsmanship and fair play are core values of the Big South Conference and its members," said Big South Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander. "The Institutional Sportsmanship Award is one of our most significant honors as it recognizes the institution that has most consistently upheld these values and conducted its athletics program in a sportsmanlike manner. We congratulate Gardner-Webb and all the team winners for their outstanding year."
Gardner-Webb was tops among the Big South membership with a 33.13 percentage of the maximum points received in its sponsored league sports. Campbell finished second with a 27.81 percentage, followed by Presbyterian College at 25.37 percent and Liberty at 25.16 percent.
