Gardner-Webb Drops 12-7 Decision to High Point Sunday Afternoon

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Gardner-Webb allowed ten runs in the first two innings to eventually fall to High Point by a 12-7 score in the weekend-series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb (13-16, 2-4 Big South) had 11 base hits on the day, led by Collin Thacker, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.  Corey Howard (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI), Chandler Redmond (2-for-4,), and Mason Fox (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) also had multiple hits for the 'Dogs.

High Point (13-14, 3-6 Big South) collected 19 base hits, with each of the starters having a base knock.  Blake Schunk led the way, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI.

The Panthers pounced in the bottom of the second inning, hitting eight consecutive base hits with two outs to score seven runs.  Two of the hits were three-run home runs, the first coming from Austin Zente, followed later in the frame by Spencer Brown.

Gardner-Webb would respond in the top of the third inning, loading the bases with one out.  Chandler Redmond would score on a passed ball, followed by a two-RBI single to left field by Corey Howard that plated Paul Trick and Mason Fox, setting the score at 7-3. 

High Point would once again push their lead to seven runs in the bottom of the third, scoring on a RBI bunt single by Zente, followed by a two-run double by Blake Schunk.

The Runnin' Bulldogs would pull within five runs in the top of the sixth inning as Collin Thacker would send a two-run blast over the left field wall. 

GWU would once again cut into High Point's lead in the top of the seventh inning, as Mason Fox would connect for a two-run home run to center field to set the score at 10-7. 

The Panthers would add a run in the bottom of the seventh as Schunk drew a bases-loaded walk from reliever Wil Sellers to lead 11-7. 

HPU would score once more in the bottom of the eighth inning as Carson Jackson would score on a passed ball.

Trevor Holloway earned the win for High Point, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing five earned runs with three strikeouts. 

Isaac Campbell took the loss for the Runnin' Bulldogs, lasting just 2.0 innings while allowing seven earned runs while striking out two batters.  Jarrett Thompson (2.2 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 2 K), Tyler Johnson (1.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 K), and Wil Sellers (2.0 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs) were effective in relief.

Gardner-Webb will host USC Upstate on Wednesday evening, with the first pitch set for 6:00 pm at John Henry Moss Stadium.
