BOILING SPRINGS — The Gardner-Webb men's basketball team will once again face a challenging non-conference schedule during the upcoming 2016-2017 campaign; a slate which includes a marque early-season tournament, an opponent from nearly every major conference, and a pair of NCAA Tournament teams.
"The upcoming season's non-conference schedule will provide our student-athletes and our fans with some really exciting games," said head coach Tim Craft. "We will go on the road to play against schools from the top basketball conferences in America including the ACC, SEC, Big 12, Big Ten and the American Athletic Conference. We are also excited to host early December home games against regional rival Furman, as well as Hampton - an NCAA tournament team from last season. When we are recruiting, we pledge that our players will be given the opportunity each year to compete against some of the top programs and players in the nation, and this season's schedule will be no different."
Gardner-Webb will open the season in the 22nd annual 2k Classic benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project.The Runnin' Bulldogs will play No. 24 SMU in Dallas, Texas on November 11 and Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 14 in the regional rounds.
The sub-regional rounds will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 18 and 19, and are projected to include Eastern Michigan, Howard, GWU and host IUPUI. The Runnin' Bulldogs will play Eastern Michigan on the 18th ahead of the championship and consolation games on the 19th.
Craft's squad will return to Paul Porter Arena on Tuesday, November 22 for their home opener against Toccoa Falls College ahead of a trip to Athens, Georgia, and a match-up with SEC foe Georgia on Friday, November 25.
Following a brief pit stop at home to take on NCAA Division II opponent Coker College on Tuesday, November 29, Gardner-Webb will travel to Lexington, Virginia for a tilt against former Big South member VMI on December 3.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will play their next three games in the friendly confines of Paul Porter Arena, when they will host Hampton on December 7, Furman on December 10 and Warren Wilson College on December 16. Gardner-Webb will then close out its non-conference slate on the road at Big 10 opponent Nebraska on December 18, followed by a trip to Big 12 foe Kansas State on December 21.
