CONCORD, N.C. – Gardner-Webb senior forward Tyrell Nelson was named to the 2016-2017 preseason All-Big South Conference first team Tuesday afternoon in conjunction with the league's annual media days.
Nelson (Charlotte, N.C. / Metrolina Christian Academy) averaged career-highs of 14.2 points and 7.6 rebounds as a junior to lead Gardner-Webb to its fourth-straight winning season and second-straight spot in the Big South Conference Tournament semifinals.
Nelson was runner up for the league's Preseason Player of the Year honor, which went to Winthrop standout point guard Keon Johnson.
The 6-foot-7, 235-pound standout was second in the Big South with a career-high 12 double-doubles, earning second-team All-Big South and Big South All-Tournament honors. He ranked second in the league in rebounding and third in field goal percentage (55.9 percent).
Nelson also improved defensively, lowering his foul total by 30 while blocking 26 shots and posting 21 steals. His work during Gardner-Webb's three Big South Conference Tournament games was impressive, as he averaged 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game for the event as GWU went 2-1.
In Nelson's last four postseason games – dating back to his sophomore season – he has averaged 21.0 points per game.
In three collegiate seasons, Nelson has scored 1,239 career points and pulled down 642 rebounds – and has shot better than 53 percent from the floor in each of his three seasons to date.
Gardner-Webb has benefitted in the win column, winning 55 games during Nelson's three seasons with the program.
The Runnin' Bulldogs open its 2016-2017 season on the road at SMU, tipping off on Friday, November 12.
