INDIANAPOLIS – Gardner-Webb will do battle with Eastern Michigan Friday morning, tipping off at Noon to begin the second segment of the 2016 2K Classic at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
The sub-regional, hosted by IUPUI, will wrap up on Saturday. Gardner-Webb will play either IUPUI or Howard in the title game (1:00 pm) or consolation game (11:00 am).
The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-2) had a solid offensive showing on Monday night against Pittsburgh, putting up 80 points against the Panthers. Four men scored in double figures, led by career-high nights from guards Laquincy Rideau (23 points), David Efianayi (20 points) and Liam O'Reilly (14 points). All-Big South forward Tyrell Nelson added 10 points for his second double figures scoring game in as many outings.
Eastern Michigan (1-2) also dropped games at Pitt and SMU last weekend, but took the Panthers to the wire before falling, 93-90, in double overtime. A win over Rochester on Tuesday gave Coach Rob Murphy's squad its first win of the season.
The Eagles are led by NBA prospect James Thompson IV (6-10, 220, So.) and dynamic guard Ray Lee. Thompson averages 10.7 points and 12.0 rebounds per game so far this season and was the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2015-2016.
Lee has poured in 21.7 points per game this season in three games and has scored 1,483 points in his career in Ypsilanti. Wing Tim Bond (6-7, 160, Jr.) also scores in double figures, averaging 12.0 points per game. Bond was a member of the MAC All-Defensive Team last season.
The Eagles are expected to enjoy a strong season and were picked to win the MAC West in the 2016-2017 preseason poll.
