CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb's Tyrell Nelson was named Big South Conference men's basketball Player of the Week Monday afternoon as selected by the league office.
Nelson (Charlotte, N.C. / Metrolina Christian Academy) averaged 19.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game for the Runnin' Bulldogs as they went 2-0 on the week.
The 6-foot-7, 235-pound senior was at his best on a big stage, scoring a game and season-high 24 points to lead Gardner-Webb to a 70-62 win at Nebraska Sunday afternoon – on national television. Nelson added two steals and a blocked shot in that win, which was the second over a Big Ten program in his career (at Purdue, 2014).
The preseason All-Big South Conference forward was 10-of-17 from the field and his lone three-pointer gave Gardner-Webb the lead for good with 12:35 left in the game. For the week, Nelson shot 66.7 percent (16-of-24) and pulled down an average of 3.0 offensive rebounds per game.
Nelson played just 20 minutes in Gardner-Webb's 50-point win over Warren Wilson on Friday night, scoring 14 points and pulling down nine boards.
Nelson leads Gardner-Webb in scoring (13.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg) so far this season, which is his fourth in the starting lineup for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
He has scored 1,402 career points and pulled down 717 rebounds in 112 games played, while also blocking 74 shots and ripping 72 steals.
Nelson's point total rank first in Gardner-Webb's Division I history and ninth in program history overall. His rebounding total is second-best in the Division I era and eighth-best overall in the Gardner-Webb record book.
Gardner-Webb (7-5) will be back in action on Wednesday night, facing Kansas State at 8:10 pm ET on the road. The game will air live on Fox Sports Kansas City (DirectTV Channel 672).
