Gardner-Webb Sits 12th After First Day Of 2017 Furman Intercollegiate Men's Golf Tournament

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Gardner-Webb sat in 12th place after the first round of the 2017 Furman Intercollegiate men's golf tournament Friday afternoon.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (293 | +5) were three strokes out of the top-10 and one stroke ahead of USC Upstate in the 21-team event.

Veteran Chris Jones led Gardner-Webb on Friday, firing a 71 to finish one-under par and tied for 17th individually on a low-scoring afternoon for the field. A total of 26 golfers finished under par Friday, led by Georgia Southern's Brett Barron – who carded a tournament-record round of 63 to finish at nine-under.

Freshman Steffen Smith finished just over par, shooting a round of 73 (+1) to sit in a tie with teammate Aaron Thomas for 48th individually. Thomas paced the field with 15 pars on 18 holes.

Vincent Blanchette (76) tied for 90th position and Johnathan Henry (77) finished in a tie for 104th heading into Saturday's second round.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will get an early start Saturday morning.

The tournament is being played on the 7,004-yard Furman University Golf Course.
