CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb standout Chris Jones was named Big South Conference Men's Golfer of the Week Thursday afternoon by the league office.
Jones (Charlotte, N.C. / Hickory Grove Christian School) led Gardner-Webb to a tie for seventh in the team standings at the 2017 Furman Intercollegiate Tournament this past weekend, shooting 7-under par over three rounds (71-67-71-209).
Jones finished in a tie for fifth individually out of 128 golfers with his effort. The event was played on Furman's 7,004-yard course (Par 72).
Jones ranked second in the field in Par 5 scoring at minus-11 and ranked fifth among all golfers with 15 birdies over three rounds. He shot a low round of 67 on Saturday, using seven birdies in the round to get into the top five – a rise of 13 positions from his first round standing.
Three of Jones' birdies came on the final four holes on Saturday.
Jones has led Gardner-Webb in scoring three times this season, and has been named Big South Golfer of the Week twice so far in 2016-2017. He ranks third on the squad currently with a 73.18 scoring average through 22 rounds played this season.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action in the Upstate of South Carolina on Monday, April 3, playing in the annual Wofford Invitational at Spartanburg Country Club (April 3-4). GWU won the event last season.
