Men's Soccer Falls To Brevard, 1-0, In Final Exhibition Match Of The Preseason

BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb dropped its third exhibition match of the 2016 preseason Sunday night, falling 1-0 to Brevard College at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

Gardner-Webb held a 19-9 shooting advantage, and had eight corner kicks, but were only able to put six of those chances on frame.

The Tornados got on the board late in the first 45 minutes, when Alec Goettl put a header into the back of the net at the 14:56 mark. The assist came from Gabriel Garcia.

It was the lone shot on goal for the visitors in the first half.

Gardner-Webb put three shots on frame, but could not pull even, as Brevard went into the locker room with its 1-0 lead intact.

Heavy rains made conditions soggy over the final 10 minutes of the first half and the second half was delayed by 90 minutes due to lightning in the area. After a quick warm up, the two teams returned to the pitch and got the final 45 minutes underway.

Brevard nearly extended its lead at the 46:35 mark, but Matthew Swan made a nice save off a shot from Winston Haddock. GWU got a pair of shots from Clay Edwards in the first 15 minutes of action, but both were wide right.

Another shot on frame from Hunter Frey (61:19) was stopped by Brevard keeper Heath Turner and shots from Frey and Ali Al-Gashamy were off the mark as the half moved to its midway point.

Backup keeper Jake Beyer made another highlight save with the clock at 71:36, stopping a 1-on-1 breakaway shot from Henrique Joaquim.

The 'Dogs had another golden opportunity moments later, but Marvin Mendy's attempt from the right wing was batted away by Eric Lenhart.

Gardner-Webb's Winter Sharpe had a pair of corner kicks in the final five minutes and got off a shot at the 85:20 mark that was blocked. Shots by Alaiin Delgado and Kai Miettinen were blocked moments earlier as GWU tried to knot the score.

The Runnin' Bulldogs open the 2016 regular season next Friday, August 26, at Davidson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
