WILMINGTON, N.C. – Maximillian Scholl picked up a win at No. 1 singles and teamed with Paul Hogan to take a doubles win, but UNC Wilmington topped Gardner-Webb, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in men's tennis action.

Scholl and Hogan sealed the doubles point for Gardner-Webb (0-3), outlasting Wilmington's Gabe Hocevar and Augustin Savarino by a 7-6 (7-2) count to give Gardner-Webb a 1-0 lead. Adam Schmidt and Mike Perry took a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles to even the score – after the Seahawks (2-2) captured No. 3 doubles to start the day.

"We played a lot better today against one of the top mid-major programs historically," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We won a really exciting doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. This is a match for us to build on as we continue non-conference play. We improved ourselves today against a tough opponent."

UNC Wilmington picked up wins in five of the six singles matches, with Scholl's 7-5, 6-3 win over Savarino at No. 1 singles the final decision of the day.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to Boiling Springs next week for their home opener, hosting Division II Limestone on Friday, February 10, at 2:00 pm.
