BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb fell on its home courts Sunday afternoon to UNC Greensboro by a 5-2 score in non-conference men's tennis action.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (4-7) fell behind early, as the Spartans (4-2) picked up wins at No. 2 doubles to start off the match and clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles.
After UNC Greensboro's Marcus Vidgren captured a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles to put the Spartans up 2-0, Gilbert pulled Gardner-Webb within one team point with a victory at No. 6 singles. The freshman standout took a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ian Melnik to cap off a strong day individually.
Greensboro captured a 7-6 (2-0), 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to go up 3-1 and clinched the victory when Connor Thompson outlasted Maximilian Scholl by a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 score at No. 1 singles.
Breno Plentz came through with a win at No. 5 singles, rallying from an early hole to beat Daniel Hammarstedt by scores of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The Spartans wrapped up the day's action with a win by William Albright at No. 3 singles. Albright and Gardner-Webb's Adam Schmidt engaged in a grueling competition, with Schmidt taking a 7-6 (4) win in the first set and Albright rallying for a 7-6 (3) win in the second – before taking the third set and the win.
Gardner-Webb will hit the road next week, traveling to USC Upstate for a match on Tuesday, February 28. The 'Dogs and Spartans will get started at 2:00 pm. The Runnin' Bulldogs return home for a four-match homestand next Saturday, hosting Charlotte (March 4) at 1:00 pm.
Coach Mike Griffith's squad will then host North Carolina A&T (March 12), UNC Asheville (March 14) and Lipscomb (March 15) – part of a March schedule that features seven home matches.
