BOILING SPRINGS – South Carolina State rallied with a pair of three-set wins in singles action Tuesday to top Gardner-Webb, 4-3, in men's tennis action.
"I was disappointed in our outcome today, as we had early momentum in doubles," said head coach Mike Griffith. "South Carolina State played better in the big points, and that was the difference. We will be ready on Saturday for our next one."
Fors tied the team score at No. 6 singles, finishing his win over Satoshi Yamada with relative ease – 6-2, 6-1 – in straight sets.
Maximilian Scholl pushed the Runnin' Bulldogs in front by a 2-1 margin with his win at No. 1 singles. The sophomore standout also won in straight sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-4.
South Carolina State turned the tide at No. 5 singles, with Stanislav Baco securing a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Ross Gilbert.
Two dogfights at the next two flights to finish proved decisive in South Carolina State's favor. The Bulldogs' Jakub Vitek captured a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles to take the lead and Vladyslav Yanchenko sealed the team win with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.
Adam Schmidt took a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles for what proved to be the final margin.
Gardner-Webb will return to Big South Conference play on Saturday, hosting Liberty at Noon in a critical league match.
