ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team fell by a 4-3 score at Big South foe Winthrop on Monday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (8-11, 3-2 Big South) got off to a quick start, taking two of three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 advantage.
The pairing of Paul Hogan and Johan Fors defeated Gabriel Dias and Diego Quiroz at the No. 1 position, 6-3, and Maximilian Scholl and Breno Plentz defeated Ruy Teixeira and Leandros Pappayiannis, 6-4, to give GWU the initial lead.
Winthrop took control of the match at the onset of singles play, taking four straight decisions to claim the overall match win. For Gardner-Webb, Scholl defeated Quiroz (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) at the No. 1 position, and Ross Gilbert defeated Aditya Gokhale (6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6) ) at the No. 5 spot.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Thursday at Campbell at 3:00 pm.
