CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb's Maximilian Scholl and Breno Plentz each earned weekly men's tennis honors from the Big South Conference Wednesday afternoon, capping a fine regular season for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Scholl (Stuttgart, Germany) was named Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the third consecutive week.
The 6-foot-2 sophomore powered Gardner-Webb to a win over Campbell that secured second place in the final league standings for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
He took a 6-4, 6-1 win in straight sets over Lukas Schaefer at No. 1 singles and teamed with Plentz for a dominant, 6-1, win at No. 2 doubles.
Each of the wins was crucial in the 4-3 team victory for GWU.
Scholl's singles win improved him to 6-1 against league foes and 9-1 in the past 10 matches. He finished the day riding an eight-match win streak in singles competition and a five-match win streak in doubles play.
Plentz (Porto Alegre, Brazil) continued to shine for the Runnin' Bulldogs, taking a straight sets win (6-4, 6-2) over Campbell's Nicolas Ratitin to help seal a 4-3 win over the Camels.
He also teamed with Scholl to deliver a dominant, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. P
Plentz improved to a stellar 6-1 against Big South Conference foes this season in singles competition and finished the day with 10 singles victories overall.
He and Scholl improved to 5-1 as a tandem and finished with a perfect 4-0 mark in Big South play together – and a five-match win streak at No. 2 doubles.
The second-place finish is the highest in any conference for Gardner-Webb in men's tennis regular season play since joining NCAA Division I as a full member for the 2003 season (Atlantic Sun Conference).
GWU will begin play in the 2017 Big South Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Wednesday, April 19 at 9:00 am vs. No. 7 Liberty. The event is being held at Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C.
