CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb's Maximilian Scholl was named first-team All-Big South Conference and Breno Plentz earned a spot on the second team as the league announced its postseason awards in advance of the 2017 Big South Men's Tennis Championship.

Scholl (Stuttgart, Germany) was second-leading vote getter overall to earn a spot on the eight-man, first-team All-Conference singles squad.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore powered Gardner-Webb to a second-place finish in the regular season, the program's highest finish since moving to Division I in any conference.

Scholl finished at 18-4 overall, which ranked second among all singles performers during the regular season His winning percentage (.818) ranked second at No. 1 singles and his 18 wins – also second – were 11 more than the next closest competitor.

Scholl was a strong 6-1 against Big South foes in singles competition, with his lone loss coming to 2017 Big South Player of the Year Henry Patton (UNC Asheville). That pair will square off once again in the first round of the Big South Conference Championship on Wednesday morning.

Scholl enters the Big South Conference postseason event with wins in eight of his final 10 matches.

Scholl also earned a spot on the Big South Conference All-Academic Team. The international business major carries an impressive 3.70 cumulative GPA in addition to his excellence on the court.

Plentz was valuable everywhere during his freshman campaign, going 12-8 overall while splitting time at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles throughout the season. He was at his best against Big South foes, going 6-1 overall in those matches – helping GWU to its highest league finish since moving to Division I.

Plentz was 4-2 at No. 4 singles, split two matches at No. 5 singles and was a stellar 4-1 at No. 6 singles this season. He also picked up 10 wins in doubles play – including a 5-1 mark with Scholl at No. 2 doubles, which includes a 4-0 league mark when the two teamed up.

Plentz finished 5-2 overall in Big South doubles action.

Both Scholl and Plentz will be back in action with Gardner-Webb on Wednesday morning vs. No. 7 seed UNC Asheville in Winston-Salem, N.C. (Wake Forest Tennis Complex).
