Men Finish Sixth, Women Seventh at the 2017 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb indoor track and field teams wrapped up the 2017 Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday afternoon, with the men's team placing sixth and the women's team placing seventh overall.

A handful of new personal records were set during the second day of the two-day event, as well as one new school record.

In the women's weight throw, Petra Jakeljic placed third with a toss of 17.72 meters, breaking the previous GWU record of 17.29 meters set by Sarah Mitchell at the 2016 Bob Pollock Invitational.

Natasha Akbarizadeh placed sixth in the event with a distance of 16.75 meters, a new personal best.  Akbarizadeh was also named to the 2017 Big South Women's Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Team. 

Cailen Blare placed 11th in the event with a new personal best toss of 14.65 meters.

Two new PRs were set in the men's weight throw, as Marcus Abraham finished in third place with a toss of 15.76 meters and Ross Lucia finished sixth at 14.35 meters.

A.J. White finished eighth in the event at 14.26 meters and Alex Bouwmans finished ninth at 14.23 meters. 

In the men's mile, Keaton Poole clocked in with a new personal record time of 4:29.60 to finish in 15th place.  Christopher Lile placed 17th with a time of 4:32.12 and Josh Parks timed in at 4:40.70 to finish in 19th.

Lile was named to the 2017 Big South Men's Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Team.

In the women's high jump, Kayin Mujahid took second place with a jump of 1.69 meters.  Ashleigh Cleveland finished 11th at 1.54 meters.

Jalin Lawson earned a seventh place finish in the men's triple jump with a distance of 14.10 meters.

Marquel Woodard finished eighth in the men's 400 meter dash finals with a time of 53.21 seconds.

In the women's 5000 meter race, Claire Cates finished 19th with a time of 18:52.60, and Gabby Cortese placed 22nd with a time of 19:11.02.

Seaver Wait earned a sixth place finish in the men's high jump at 1.94 meters. 

Carlos Williams placed sixth in the men's 60 meter dash finals with a time of 7.09 seconds.

In the men's 5000 meter race, Keaton Poole finished 11th with a time of 15:40.81, and Christopher Lile clocked in at 16:41.33 to finish in 14th. 

In the men's 4x400 meter relays, the team of Carlos Williams, Darien Evans-Hensley, Darius Gary, and Marquel Woodard finished sixth with a time of 3:30.13. 

The team of Jordan Davis, Merideth Byl, Paige Peterson, and Kayin Mujahid earned a third-place finish in the women's 4x400 meter relay, timing in at 3:55.74.

Liberty took the overall team championships on both the men's and women's sides.
