BOILING SPRINGS – Tierra Huntsman scored 21 points, including 3-for-5 shooting from behind the three-point line, to lead Gardner-Webb to a 68-38 win over Converse College on Wednesday evening.
Gardner-Webb improved to 2-2 on the season, holding Converse to a 23.1% shooting performance and also outrebounded the Valkyries by a 60-37 clip.
Huntsman was the leading scorer for the Runnin' Bulldogs with 21 points on a 9-for-15 performance, followed by Evelyn Adebayo with 12 points (4-for-10) and Savannah Plentovich added nine points from the bench, going 4-for-5 from the floor. Charlissa Jenkins led the team in rebounding, pulling in 13 boards.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got of to a hot start, opening the game on a 16-4 run, capped by a Jenkins layup with 4:02 remaining in the opening period. Converse would pull within seven points at the 1:20 mark and would trail by nine at 20-11 at the end of the first period.
Gardner-Webb would continue to control play in the second period, pushing the lead to as high as 19 with 1:12 to go in the half after a layup from Huntsman to put the score at 35-16, and would lead by a score of 36-20 at halftime.
Converse would trim the margin to 10 points early in the third period, starting the frame on a 7-0 run to set the score at 36-26 with 8:28 on the clock, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would take over again, expanding their lead to 21 points at the end of the quarter to lead by a score of 52-31.
Gardner-Webb would outscore Converse, 16-7 in the final period to seal the contest, expanding the lead to 30 in the final seconds as Plentovich drove to the basket, drawing contact on a layup to covert an old-fashioned three-point play to set the margin at 68-38, which would be the final score.
Gardner-Webb will have a few days to prepare for its next opponent, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford on Tuesday evening. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
