Runnin' Bulldogs Fall to Campbell, 73-61, Saturday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A 14-4 run by Campbell early in the fourth period was too much for Gardner-Webb to overcome, as the Runnin' Bulldogs dropped a 73-61 decision to Big South Conference leader Campbell on Saturday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena.

The run would extend lead for Campbell (15-4, 7-1 Big South) to 21 points with 4:50 to go, yet Gardner-Webb (8-11, 3-5 Big South) would pull within 12 points with 48 seconds remaining and would go on to fall by that margin.

The Runnin' Bulldogs opened the game with a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Kiera Currie and would lead by as many as six points in the opening period with 53 seconds remaining after a layup from Ky'Asia Stanford. A late Campbell layup would set the score at 15-11 after the first quarter.

GWU would maintain its slight lead throughout the first part of the second period, leading by a score of 24-22 with 4:42 on the clock after a layup from Tierra Huntsman.  Campbell would tie the game on its next possession and would take its first lead of the game with 2:56 remaining in the frame.  The Camels would make one more basket in the final seconds of the period to lead by a score of 28-24 at the half.

Alexus Hill would score in the opening seconds of the third period, yet Campbell would score seven unanswered points to extend its lead to 35-26 with 6:58 on the clock.  An 8-2 run by the Runnin' Bulldogs would pull the team within three points at 37-34 with 4:06 remaining in the period after a three-pointer from Hill, but Campbell would respond with an 8-0 spurt to lead by 11 points with 1:56 to go in the period, and would lead by that margin at the end of the third quarter, 49-38. 

Campbell would extend its lead to a game-high 21 points with 4:50 to go in the final period, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would go on a quick 6-0 run to pull within 15 points with 3:45 on the clock.  GWU would take advantage of missed free throws by Campbell within the next few minutes of play and would trim the margin to 12 points with 48 seconds to go after Huntsman connected from long distance.  The Camels would make their next six attempts from the free throw line, yet GWU would continue to score, with Hill knocking down a jumper in the paint with seven seconds left to set the score at 73-61.

Hill led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 19 points on the afternoon, going 9-of-12 from the floor.  Huntsman followed with 13 points on a 4-of-9 shooting performance. 

Campbell had four players reach double digits in scoring, let by Makala Rouse with 20 points on 7-of -12 shooting. 

Gardner-Webb returns to action on Tuesday evening, as the team travels to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Winthrop.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm and the game can be seen on the Big South Network (
