Women's Basketball Downs Winthrop, 89-54, Tuesday Evening

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Gardner-Webb used a 24-6 run in the third period to take control of the game, earning an 89-54 over Winthrop in Big South Conference action on Tuesday evening.

Gardner-Webb (9-11, 4-5 Big South) shot 45.7 percent from the floor throughout the game on 32-of-70 shooting, including going 12-of 27 from behind the three-point line.  Winthrop (2-19, 1-8 Big South) was held to 31.0 percent for the game on 18-of-58 shooting. 

Four Runnin' Bulldogs scored in double-digits, led by Tierra Huntsman with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including five made three pointers.  Morgan Ackermann scored a career-high 13 points, going 4-of-11 from behind the arc. Evelyn Adebayo added 11 points and Ky'Asia Stanford scored 10 points. 

Winthrop was led offensively by Erica Williams with 19 points.

The Runnin' Bulldogs came out of the gates hot, opening the game with a 15-3 run, capped by a steal and layup by Huntsman with 5:44 on the clock.  During that stretch, Huntsman scored eight points, including going 2-for-2 from long distance. 

GWU would increase its lead to as high as 16 points at 23-7 after a made free throw by Huntsman with 1:05 remaining in the period, but Winthrop would score the final seven points of the quarter to pull within nine points, 23-14, after one period.

Winthrop would continue its run at the onset of the second period, scoring the first five points of the frame to trim GWU's lead to four points at 23-19 with 6:38 on the clock.  The Runnin' Bulldogs would respond with a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to build a 15 point lead with 2:19 to go in the half.

The Eagles would score the last two baskets of the quarter to set the score at 36-25 in Gardner-Webb's favor at the half.

The Runnin' Bulldogs would open the second half much like they did the first, making all five of their first five attempts from the floor to push their lead to 21 points with 7:25 on the clock. 

Gardner-Webb would extend its lead to as high as 33 points with 1:00 left in the quarter after Adebayo converted an old-fashioned three-point play, and would lead by that margin at the end of the third period, 68-35. 

GWU outscored Winthrop, 32-10, throughout the quarter, shooting 65 percent from the floor.

The Runnin' Bulldogs would lead by a game-high 39 points with 2:17 remaining in the fourth period after a three pointer from Ackermann and would go on to win by 35 points by a final score of 89-54.
