BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb women's lacrosse opens its 2017 home schedule in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium Tuesday afternoon, hosting Saint Francis (Pa.) at 2:00 pm.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-2) topped the Red Flash last March by a 12-11 score, getting three goals from Amanda Steinmuller in the win.
Saint Francis (2-1) is coming off a 16-3 road win over Big South member Presbyterian on Sunday, with freshman Sydney Davis netting five goals in that win. The Red Flash have won two in a row after also taking a 15-10 win at Radford last week.
Gardner-Webb has dropped its first two matches on the road at Virginia Tech and Mercer so far. Steinmuller (four goals, three assists) and Cassidy McDowell (four goals) have paced the Runnin' Bulldogs to date, with Emma Rose (two goals, assist) also contributing well on offense.
Catherine Fox has dished off two assists, which ranks second to Steinmuller this season.
Rose leads Gardner-Webb with six ground balls and six draw controls through two games.
The Runnin' Bulldogs have gone with youth in the net this season, with freshmen Melan White and Katie Sylvester splitting time. White has 17 saves in nearly 100 minutes played, with Sylvester holding an 8.79 goals against average in just over 20 minutes.
Tuesday's game is the first of nine in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium for the Runnin' Bulldogs. GWU will host Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, March 3 (6:00 pm), then will host Butler (March 8), LIU Brooklyn (March 10) and Furman (March 23) before getting into Big South Conference play in April.
