BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell closed the game on a 13-0 run Saturday afternoon to create distance in a 22-6 win over Gardner-Webb in Big South women's lacrosse action.
Steinmuller's second goal of the run came with 24:10 left in the first half.
Campbell answered quickly, getting a goal from Sami Smit with 22:51 on the clock – and another from Mackenzie Koeller at the 22:07 mark to tie the game. Those two goals were part of a larger 6-0 run that put the Fighting Camels up 7-3 with 8:02 in the half.
Steinmuller struck again, however, netting her 37th goal of the season with 7:17 left before intermission to trim the lead to 7-4. A score from Emma Rose with 5:26 left made the score 7-5, but Campbell countered with two more goals – before Hanscom scored again for a 9-6 score with only 1:48 on the clock.
Sarah Paul scored with 52 seconds remaining in the half for a 10-6 edge at the break for Campbell.
Paul started a 12-0 second-half run for the Fighting Camels just 59 seconds in, scoring her second in a row for an 11-6 edge. Campbell scored six goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a double figure lead and kept the pressure on until the final moments.
Gardner-Webb got three goals from Steinmuller, who needs just one more to tie program's single-season mark in that category. She added an assist and did her damage on just three shots.
Hanscom (two goals) and Rose capped the scoring for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who finished with only 10 shots in the game.
Katie Sylvester got the start in goal and finished with 12 saves and a team-high three ground balls. Hanscom, Rose and Michelle Hedrick each had a pair of ground balls – with Hedrick also causing three turnovers.
Campbell finished with 44 shots in the game, with 34 on goal. Koeller finished the day with seven goals and an assist to lead the home team offensively. Melissa Placek, Paul and Tina Ricci each had three goals – and Smit added two.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Wednesday, traveling to face Winthrop at 6:00 pm in Rock HIll, S.C.
