BOILING SPRINGS – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Troy in the 2016 season opener at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-1) and Trojans (1-0) were tied after 45 minutes of action.
Brooke McKee scored the first goal for Troy in the 53rd minute, taking a cross from Abby Reynolds and finishing on the break for a 1-0 lead.
Reynolds tallied the second and final goal of the match, putting home a rebound shot for the final margin.
Troy outshot Gardner-Webb, 15-9, on the night. The two teams were nearly even in the second half, with GWU getting off seven of its shot total in the final 45 minutes. The Trojans did accumulate seven corner kicks in the match, with all coming in the scoreless first half.
Reynolds played well for Troy, with three points on the night. She was efficient, with two shots in 52 minutes played. McKee had four shots in the match, with two on goal. Amber Harless finished with three shots for the Trojans.
Mikki Lewis recorded her 21st career shutout between the posts for Troy.
Gardner-Webb was led offensively by midfielder Stine Kleppe and forward Jessica Ferguson with two shots each.
Keeley Brown played all 90 minutes in goal for Gardner-Webb, finishing with two saves.
Gardner-Webb is in action again on Sunday, traveling to face Big Ten foe Maryland. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm in College Park, Md.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return home on Friday, August 26, to host Davidson College at 7:00 pm.
