CHARLOTTE — Gardner-Webb redshirt freshman Emma Milstead (Knoxville, Tenn.) has been named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career following a record-setting first weekend of the season, announced league officials Monday.
Milstead marked her collegiate debut at libero in record-setting fashion on Friday afternoon, setting a new program record for digs in a four-set match with 37 in Gardner-Webb's 3-1 season-opening win over Robert Morris. The Knoxville, Tennessee native improved as the match went on, posting eight digs in each of the first two sets before tallying 10 in the third and 11 in the final frame. Milstead's mark surpassed the previous mark set by all-time digs leader Anna Pashkova last season by five.
The redshirt freshman libero added 15 digs in the four-set setback to Morehead State later that evening. She then capped the weekend with 29 digs, seven assists and one service ace in the heartbreaking five-set loss to host The Citadel. Milstead currently leads the Big South with an average of 6.23 digs per set, which ranks second in the nation after the season's first weekend.
