CHARLOTTE — Gardner-Webb redshirt freshman Emma Milstead (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up her second Big South weekly award of the season Monday after being named the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced League officials Monday.
This is the first time Milstead has been named the Big South's Defensive Player of the Week in her career, and her second weekly honor from the Big South after being named The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week on August 29.
Milstead played a critical role in Gardner-Webb's 3-1 worksheet last week, averaging 5.38 digs per set despite only registering 10 digs in GWU's sweep of South Carolina State to open the week. The Knoxville, Tennessee native tallied a season-high five service aces to go along with 14 digs against Delaware State, before posting 19 digs in GWU's sweep of Norfolk State on Saturday to help GWU push its win streak to 13 straight sets and five matches overall.
She capped the week with 27 digs, four assists and two aces against Elon. Milstead currently leads the conference by more than one dig per set with a season average of 5.62, and entered the weekend ranked 11th in the nation. For her efforts this weekend, Milstead was named to the Phoenix Classic All-Tournament Team - her second such distinction in as many tournaments this season.
Gardner-Webb returns to the court on Wednesday when the Runnin' Bulldogs host North Carolina A&T at 6:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena.
