Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision At High Point Friday Night

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Taylor Lillard posted double digit kills and digs, yet the Gardner-Webb volleyball team fell to Big South Conference foe High Point by a 3-1 score on Friday night.

High Point (19-9, 10-5 Big South) took the match by scores of 17-25. 25-19, 25-21, and 25-14, holding Gardner-Webb (13-17, 3-12 Big South) to a .118 hitting percentage with 47 kills, while attacking at a .197 clip with 52 kills.

Lillard led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 17 kills, while Emma Milstead tallied 20 digs on the evening.  Tinsley Fain led the team with 20 assists, while Kaelyn Dyson and Hannah Driscoll each had three blocks.

High Point was led in kills and digs by Haley Barnes with 13 and 18 respectively while Jenna Smith posted 29 assists and Jordan Hefner led the way with 11 blocks.

Gardner-Webb controlled most of the action in the opening set, taking a lead a 6-5 after a block from Dyson and would not trail again for the remainder of the frame.  GWU would take the set by a 25-17 score, claiming the set after a kill by Keira Moore.

High Point would open the second set with a 5-1 run, yet the Runnin' Bulldogs would rally to tie the set a 6-6 after a service ace from Amanda Sahm.  The Panthers would then go on an 7-2 run to take a 13-7 lead.  GWU would pull within three points at 22-19 after a Nicole Celarek smash, yet HPU would hold on to take the set, 25-19.

Gardner-Webb started the fourth set with a quick 6-3 spurt, capped by a kill from Lillard, yet the Panthers would string together three unanswered points to tie the set 6-6.  Action would be back and forth throughout the remainder of the set, with neither team establishing a lead of more than two points until GWU took a 20-17 lead after a Lillard smash.  High Point would rally with a run of 8-1 to take the set, 25-21.

HPU would control the fourth set, opening with a 5-2 run that lead to a Gardner-Webb timeout.  Gardner-Webb would respond to pull within two points at 10-8 after a kill by Molly Johnston, but High Point would go to take the set by a score  of 25-14 and the overall match win.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will close out the 2016 season Saturday afternoon at Campbell at 2:00 pm.
