BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Kaelyn Dyson and Nicole Celarek posted double digit kills, while both Tinsley Fain and Amanda Sahm had ten or more digs and assists, yet the Gardner-Webb volleyball team fell to Campbell by a 3-1 score in the final match of the 2016 season for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Campbell (15-15, 10-6 Big South) took the match by scores of 25-16, 23-25, 29-27, and 25-15, holding Gardner-Webb (13-17, 3-12 Big South) to a .067 attacking percentage with 43 kills, while attacking at a .161 clip with 60 kills.
Dyson led Gardner-Webb in kills with 11, followed closely by Celarek with 10. Emma Milstead led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 29 digs, followed by Taylor Lillard with 19, Fain with 16, Kacy O'Connor with 15, and Amanda Sahm with 14. Fain led the squad with 22 assists with Sahm tallying 16. Dyson also led the team with four blocks.
Campbell was led in kills by Allena Heath with 21, digs by Kayla Schanback with 35, assists by Summer Schuitema with 27, and Jenny Tait with six blocks.
The Camels would go on a 7-3 run to start the opening set and would push their lead to as high as nine points at 18-9. GWU would go on a quick 5-2 run to pull within 20-14 after a kill by Hannah Driscoll, yet Campbell would pull out to a nine point win, 25-16, in the opening set.
The second set was tightly contested throughout, with nether team gaining much of advantage until Gardner-Webb strung together four unanswered points to take a 10-6 lead after a service ace from Fain. Four points would be the largest lead of the set for GWU, holding that lead at 20-16, before Campbell would pull within one point at 20-19. The Runnin' Bulldogs would keep a lead throughout the remainder of the set, taking a 25-23 win after a block by Sahm and Dyson.
Gardner-Webb built an early 11-6 advantage in the third set after a 4-0 spurt that was capped by a block from Hannah Lancaster and Dyson, but the Camels would answer to take an 18-14 lead. Gardner-Webb would respond with a 7-1 run to claim a 21-19 lead after a service ace from Lillard, yet play would to back and forth for the remainder of the set, with extra points needed to decide the outcome until Campbell scored two straight to take the set, 29-27.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would open the fourth set with a 9-6 lead after a service ace by O'Connor but Campbell would score five unanswered points to take a 11-0 lead and would hold a lead throughout the remainder of the set, taking the frame by a score of 25-19 and claiming the overall match win.
